How to get started painting with watercolors

Are you a beginner, looking to get started painting with watercolors? Here are the materials that I recommend:

Paints: A full color kit of watercolor tubes will last you many, many paintings. The colors in this pack are bright, easy to mix, and comprehensive: https://amzn.to/39MQcCe

Paper: I love spiral bound watercolor books like these. I sometimes use them for other mediums as well, and even serious brainstorming: https://amzn.to/2Q6RsZ2

Artist’s Tape: For taping down your watercolor paper and creating a clean frame around your painting: https://amzn.to/38JXN3g

Wax Resist: For masking out white areas while saturating with color: https://amzn.to/2W9u6pq

Wax Resist eraser: For removing the wax resist easily and cleanly: https://amzn.to/2TJr1e8

A paint tray: You’ll want this kind in order to add water to your paints in the little wells: https://amzn.to/38K5Ug3

Brushes: You can use the same two small brushes that are used for my acrylic painting classes for watercolors:

What you need to get started acrylic painting

Here is everything that you need to Paint Along With Skye each week:

It’s not you, it’s the paints

If you are having trouble mixing colors as a beginning painter, make sure that you are not using cheap craft paints. While these paints are sometimes suitable for crafts, their low level of pigment will have you frustrated when you are trying to mix colors and paint on canvas.

I recommend Blick Studio acrylic paints. They have great coverage, are vibrant, and affordable. You will need the following colors to paint along each week:

  • Primary Red
  • Primary Blue
  • Primary Yellow
  • Titanium White
  • Mars Black
  • Phthalo Green
  • Cadmium Orange
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Deep Violet

Brushes

You will need the same three standard brushes for Acrylic Bootcamp that you’ll need to Paint Along With Skye on Youtube. I love these synthetic, all media brushes. These are the sizes and shapes you’ll need:

  • A Flat Wash, Size 1” brush “Big Square brush”
  • A Round, Size 12 brush “Medium-Sized Round brush”
  • A Round, Size 2 brush “Tiny round brush”

Everything else

You’ll need something to paint on. I love to use boxed canvases from value packs, such as these. You can paint on any size you like, but I favor the 12×16″ or 11×14″ sizes for my tutorials.

You will need a palate such as this, and if you wish, you can use palate paper to ease your clean up process.

You will need to put down some sort of protective covering on the tablespace where you are painting, such as a table cloth or butcher paper. You will also need paper towels and a water cup.

Lastly you may choose to use an easel, I like these aluminum table top easels, and you may also want to wear an apron to protect your clothes.

Ok, let’s get creative!!

RECAP

Paints required to Paint Along With Skye: Red, Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Thalo Green, Black, White, Warm Brown, Purple and Orange

3 Brushes: Large and flat, medium and pointed, and a tiny detail brush

Everything else: Canvases, tabletop easel (optional), apron (optional), table cover (highly advised), palate and palate paper or paper plates, water cup, paper towels

For me, a hot cup of coffee is also a must and gets me in the zone. ❤ Hope you found this list useful. Tune in to Youtube for free painting classes every Saturday. Until then, stay creative!!
